Director of Applied Research (AI) - Medical Imaging Company


About the role

We're hiring a Director of Applied Research (AI) for a well‑established medical imaging company. Reporting to the CTO and sitting on the Management Team, you'll define the deep‑learning vision, translate clinical needs into product opportunities, and drive the R&D roadmap from prototyping to regulated commercial release. This is a hands‑on strategic role, you'll build and lead the AR team, shape technical architecture and data strategy, and partner across Product, Clinical, QARA and Commercial functions to deliver clinically validated AI features at scale.


What You'll Do

  • Set and execute the applied research & deep‑learning strategy, balancing short‑term product priorities and longer‑term innovation.
  • Lead, hire and mentor a team of AR researchers and DL specialists; create an innovation‑driven, high‑performance culture.
  • Own feasibility, architecture and validation of DL solutions (including image‑segmentation and traditional image‑processing as appropriate).
  • Manage acquisition and compliant use of clinical datasets and production‑ready clinical data pipelines.
  • Maintain and evolve legacy image‑processing algorithms and define replacement/enhancement roadmaps.
  • Ensure seamless transition of research outputs into product development (NPI/MLP/Vision phases) and regulatory readiness in partnership with QARA.
  • Represent the company in external collaborations with KOLs, hospitals, academia and industry.


What You'll Bring

  • PhD in engineering, computer science, medical imaging or related field.
  • Deep expertise in DL theory and practice, with 5+ years applying DL in commercial medical imaging contexts.
  • 5+ years managing technical teams.
  • Strong track record in image segmentation/processing and clinical AI validation; cardiovascular domain experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated publication record and ability to engage clinical and commercial stakeholders.
  • Excellent English communication skills and experience operating within regulated medical‑device environments.
